Overall, social presence is essential in online courses, but it is still unclear if educators should focus on how social presence is being performed or perceived. Additionally, it is clear that identity is very complex in an online learning environment; many factors such as ethnicity and gender have to be taken into account. Therefore, social presence and identity remain areas that have to be explored more thoroughly and defined so there can be a common language between researchers to have a more profound understanding of how they impact online learning.
