Entrenchment of Local Elites under British Rule

Under British colonial rule, the power of local elites, such as large landowners, was deliberately entrenched. The administration relied on these elites to collect taxes, a policy that solidified their property rights and authority. While these landlords already held considerable influence before the British arrived, this system greatly strengthened their position, creating an incentive structure where they prioritized tax collection over investing in the modernization of the economy.
