Determining Anil's Best Response When Bala Chooses Toxic Tide

This example explains how to determine Anil's best response if he knows Bala will choose the 'Toxic Tide' (T) strategy. There are two ways to find this. First, using the payoff matrix: if Bala plays 'T', Anil can choose 'IPC' for a payoff of 1 (from the (I, T) outcome) or choose 'T' for a payoff of 2 (from the (T, T) outcome). Since a payoff of 2 is greater than 1, choosing 'T' is his best response. Second, using the allocation graph: the (I, T) outcome corresponds to the coordinates (1, 4), while the (T, T) outcome corresponds to (2, 2). Because Anil's utility increases on indifference curves further to the right, the point (2, 2) is preferred over (1, 4). Both methods confirm that Anil's best response is to use Toxic Tide.
