Determining Anil's Best Response When Bala Chooses IPC

This example demonstrates how to determine Anil's best response if he knows Bala will choose Integrated Pest Control (IPC), which is abbreviated as 'I' in some contexts. This can be found in two ways, using the payoff matrix or the allocation graph. First, using the payoff matrix: if Bala plays 'IPC', Anil's options are to also choose 'IPC' for a payoff of 3 (the (I, I) outcome) or to choose 'Toxic Tide' for a payoff of 4 (the (T, I) outcome). Since 4 is greater than 3, his best response is 'Toxic Tide'. Second, using the allocation graph: the (I, I) outcome is at point (3, 3), while the (T, I) outcome is at (4, 1). As Anil's utility increases on indifference curves further to the right, the point (4, 1) is preferred. Both methods show that Anil's best response is to use Toxic Tide.
