Example of Negative Reinforcement: Seatbelt Alarm
A common application of negative reinforcement is the seatbelt alarm system in modern cars. The system produces an annoying beeping sound (an undesirable stimulus) that only stops when the driver performs the desired behavior of fastening the seatbelt. The cessation of the sound reinforces the act of buckling up, making it more probable in the future.

A child is afraid of the dark and cries every night when the lights are turned off. To stop the crying, the parent leaves a nightlight on. The parent observes that as long as the nightlight is on, the child no longer cries. Consequently, the parent decides to use the nightlight every night. Which statement best explains why the parent's behavior of using the nightlight is strengthened?
