The callous-unemotional (CU) factor can be described as impulsivity, deviance, and inflated self-importance. CU factor can also be described as a lack of concern for others’ feelings, disregard for responsibilities, insincerity, lacking guilt, lying, and shallow behavior.

Conduct problems and impulsivity in child psychopathy were later studied as combinations of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD). Studies show the combination of symptoms of ADHD, ODD/CD, and exhibiting high callous-unemotional (CU) traits in children are more likely to have psychopathic tendencies.

Use of dispositional mindfulness in people exhibiting psychopathic tendencies including antisocial behavior has been shown to help decrease the chances of those traits increasing over time. Those using more mindfulness have had a tendency to have less increase in antisocial behavior.

Factors of Child Psychopathy

While they have similar tendencies, psychopathy and antisocial behavior these two things are not the same.  Psychopaths may have antisocial behaviors but people with antisocial behaviors may not classify as psychopaths by the DSM. 

Clarification Between Psychopathy and Antisocial Behavior

Research shows that crime is extremely common among psychopaths. In fact, psychopathy is the variable most highly correlated to being in prison. For instance, 16% of adult males currently in prison, jail, parole, or probation are psychopaths. Additionally, about 1,150,000 adult males in the United States meet the criteria for psychopathy and 93% of them are in prison, jail, parole, or probation.

Crime and Psychopathy

Evidence suggests that an interactive model is the best way to explain how psychopathy develops. As of now, many scholars believe that those who become psychopaths have a genetic predisposition for it and when they are immersed in an unhealthy environment, the disorder blossoms.

Potential causes of psychopathy

Dr. Hare, a psychologist focused on the field of criminal psychology, published his Psychopathy Checklist in 1980. It is made up of three models that include different factors. Hence, his clinical definition of what traits a psychopath holds is described in this checklist, which many professionals use to diagnose such disorder.

Psychopathy References

Based on earlier studies, researchers used to believe that one of the many roots of psychopathy are defects in the brain’s frontal cortex — especially in areas associated with reasoning and executive control. For example, one study published by scholar Antonio Damasio and his colleagues found that some cases of lesions to areas of the frontal lobe led to psychopathic behaviors.

Similar to sociopathy, this condition is a lack of empathy and understanding of others. Emotions may not be experienced much at all in these individuals. However, the emphasis relies more on manipulative behavior. True social connections may not be possible, only feigned. Though manipulative and unempathetic, these individuals can be seen as charming to others and capable of maintaining a relatively normal life. Unlike the sociopath, they tend to be more risk-averse and caring about themselves.

A significant debate in psychology and ethics involves whether individuals with psychopathy are morally responsible for their actions. The core issue is whether their characteristic deficits in empathy and emotional processing prevent them from genuinely understanding the difference between right and wrong, or if their cognitive awareness of societal rules is sufficient for accountability.

Only 11% of programs back in the day had disabilities studies in programs for students.  

In a study by Olkin that is included in the article it states “Results indicated that 9 years after passage of the ADA, the modal number of required courses on disability was still zero, as it was in 1989. In 1999, only 11% of programs had at least one course on disability (less than in 1989). Further, this disability course was most likely to be on “exceptional” children, learning disabilities, or mental retardation—courses that generally reflect the medical model of disability. Only 7 out of 210 programs had a course on psychosocial aspects of disability (i.e., courses that were more likely to reflect the new paradigm of disability)”(Olkin 296–304).

Disability studies is based around the premise that if the built environment was made more accessible and that accessibility was enforced through a legal system, that indequities that create disability would lessen to the possible point of disability disappearing as a form of embodiment. Disability Studies is focused around the social model.

Whereas, Critical Disability Studies is more centered around examining a political-relational model of disability that understands disability as a contestable and transformable category that has been created by larger political and historical forces - a political/relational model of disability, and more pointedly understanding how the category of disability both plays out in individual's lives while also critiquing and examining the system that created the model of disability.

Difference between Critical Disability Studies and Disability Studies

DS emerged as an interdisciplinary field rejecting deficit-driven ideologies and advocating for full societal inclusion of disabled people. Rooted in poststructuralism and postmodernism, it emphasizes activism and social/political transformation rather than medical intervention. The field privileges voices of disabled people and examines disability as socio-political-cultural phenomenon. DS challenges traditional academic approaches that pathologize difference.

Framework for Disability Studies

While both clinical and counseling psychology are applied fields, they differ in their primary focus. Clinical psychology is centered on the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders and problematic behaviors. In contrast, counseling psychology works with psychologically healthy individuals to improve their emotional, social, vocational, and health-related outcomes.
