This diagram illustrates the standard classification of a country's population for labour market analysis. It shows a hierarchical breakdown, starting with the total population, which is divided into the working-age population and those outside it (e.g., children, elderly). The working-age population is then further segmented into the labour force (economically active) and the inactive population. Finally, the labour force itself is composed of the employed and the unemployed. The relative sizes of these segments form the basis for key statistics used to evaluate and compare labour market performance.
