Modified Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) for Comorbid Psychotic Disorder and Substance Use Disorder
Modified motivational enhancement therapy (MET) focuses on patients with lower motivation and typically works in conjunction with other mental health treatments, rather than being an entirely stand-alone approach. Since individuals with psychotic disorder may have cognitive impairment, lower self-efficacy, and need mental health treatment, traditional MET has been modified to include more therapist activity and behavioral strategies that accommodate for the patient’s level of alertness. This approach involves creating a therapeutic alliance, helping the patient assess pros and cons of substance use, developing individualized goals, promoting healthy environmental and lifestyle changes, and teaching skills for coping with crises.
