Parallels in Sexual Physiology Between Animals and Humans

While human sexual behavior is more complex than that of animals, research on animal models offers valuable parallels. For instance, the dissociation between sexual motivation and the physical ability to perform sexually is also observed in humans, as evidenced by the widespread use of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction. Furthermore, the hypothalamus is crucial for sexual function in humans; disorders of this brain region often lead to hypogonadism (reduced gonad function) and decreased sexual activity. Hormones also play a key role, with circulating testosterone levels being strongly linked to the degree of sexual motivation across all genders, a finding that echoes hormonal influences seen in many animal species.
