Place Value System

Our number system is a place value system, meaning the value of each digit is determined by its position within a number. For instance, in 5,278,1945{,}278{,}194, the digit 55 represents five millions because it sits in the millions position, while 44 represents four ones because it occupies the ones position. The same digit can therefore represent very different quantities depending on where it appears.
