Place Value Periods

In the place value system, digit positions are organized into groups of three called periods. From right to left, these periods are ones, thousands, millions, billions, and trillions, continuing further for larger numbers. Each period contains three places: a hundreds place, a tens place, and a ones place (e.g., the thousands period has the hundred-thousands, ten-thousands, and thousands places). In written numbers, commas are used to separate adjacent periods.
