Rounding Whole Numbers

Rounding is the process of approximating a number by replacing it with a nearby value that has fewer non-zero digits. A number is rounded to a specific place value depending on the level of precision required. For example, the U.S. Census estimated New York's 2013 population as 19,651,12719{,}651{,}127, but stating the population as "approximately 20 million" (rounded to the millions place) is often sufficient for everyday use. Rounding simplifies large numbers while keeping them close enough to the original value to remain practical.
