Procedure for Requesting and Installing an Approved Substitute

If a specified item cannot be obtained, the contractor may request a substitute rather than simply installing whatever is available. The replacement must be acceptable to the code authority and carry the required listing or equivalent approval. It also has to match the design intent for key characteristics such as voltage rating, ampacity, temperature rating, physical size, and intended use. The contractor should secure written authorization from the owner, general contractor, or design professional before installation. Skipping that step can lead to failed inspections, added labor, and contract disputes.
