And if, God forbid, it is a daughter,
The work came out raw and was not fully cooked.
Your fortune has undoubtedly become ominous,
Your auspicious luck will be reversed.
He whose very appearance brings you shame
Will come as a suitor for your daughter.
Your home and estate will be filled with shame,
The house will become a fortress for her sake.
Do not feel secure with anyone after that,
For you will find no one trustworthy concerning her.
You cannot invite anyone to yourself,
No one scatters walnuts on a dome.
You cannot bring a male guest home,
One cannot trust a bedouin.
When do fire and cotton ever pair together?
Your entire home and estate will turn to nothing.
Whether you buy a slave or have an apprentice,
Through worthlessness, dust will rise with her.
He will soon desire to be your son-in-law,
And consider himself part of the household.
How well spoke that great master,
He who laid the foundation of poetry.
That whoever has a daughter instead of a son,
Even if he is a king, he is ill-starred.
And he upon whom we send blessings,
Said that burying daughters is among noble deeds.
Since the daughters (stars) of the bier are in the sky,
On earth, being paired with a bier is undoubtedly better.
As in the sky the daughters are with the bier,
On earth too, the daughters are upon the bier.
Whoever has a daughter, especially of his own loins,
There is no better son-in-law for him than the grave.
