Sociodemographic Factors Affecting Schizophrenia Caregivers' Health

Among caregivers of schizophrenia patients, sociodemographic characteristics are linked to caregiver health outcomes: lower caregiver education is associated with poorer health-related quality of life; closer kinship to the patient (parent, spouse, or child, rather than a more distant relative) is associated with better caregiver physical health; and caring for a patient with multiple illness episodes is associated with worse caregiver physical health, likely due to greater caregiving demands and more negative coping strategies. Clinical staff should prioritize additional support for caregivers with lower education, closer kinship to the patient, and those caring for patients with multiple relapse episodes.
