Concept
Spacing and Self-testing impact on URM students study introduction
- There is a large STEM achievement gap-a higher percentage of white and asian students that aim to complete a STEM degree (43 and 52% respectively) are successful than Latino, African-American, or Native-American students (21.8, 24.9, and 24.9% respectively)
- Spacing is important because it provides the learner with multiple opportunities to be exposed to and learn the material
- Spacing works because students tend to forget the information between study sessions and therefore have the opportunity to re-learn it each time
- Self-testing is helpful because it encourages retrieval practice
- Practice tests and spacing together are the most beneficial
- Studies have found that even though students might know that spaced practice is better for their learning, this does not necessarily increase the probability that they will utilize these techniques
- Instead of altering the way the course was structured, they wanted to see if having the professor repeatedly encourage self-testing and spacing would motivate the students to do so
