Substantia Nigra

Located in the midbrain, the substantia nigra (Latin for 'black substance') contains neurons that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is essential for initiating and controlling movement. In addition to motor function, this midbrain structure is critically involved in regulating mood, processing rewards, and driving addiction. The progressive degeneration of cells within the substantia nigra is a major underlying factor in Parkinson's disease.
