The Dual Challenge of Human Resources: Recruitment and Motivation

A firm's human resources department faces a two-part challenge. The first part is recruitment: attracting a sufficient number of qualified workers, which can be achieved by offering a wage that meets or exceeds their individual reservation wages. The second, equally important part is motivation: ensuring that once hired, these employees work hard and effectively. This second challenge is addressed by creating incentives, such as paying a wage premium above the reservation wage.
