The Economy as a Subsystem of Society and the Biosphere

This conceptual model, illustrated by Figure 1.20, frames the economy as a subsystem operating within the larger social system, which is in turn contained by the biosphere. This nested hierarchy implies that economic activity, or the production of a livelihood, is dependent on interactions both among people (the social system) and with the natural world (the biosphere).
