Treatment: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Some techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have also been proven to be useful in reducing symptoms of prolonged grief disorder. Exposure therapy, specifically exposure to the story of the death, has been found to successfully decrease depressive symptoms and improve functioning. CBT is also helpful in treating specific symptoms of prolonged grief disorder such as sleep disturbance. Treatment that focuses on grief may not be as effective in treating sleep disturbance, however methods of CBT used for insomnia such as sleep hygiene, stimulus control, sleep restriction and cognitive restructuring can aid in tending to this symptom of prolonged grief disorder.
