Treatment: Pharmacotherapy
Similar to other forms of treatment for prolonged grief disorder, pharmacotherapy can be used to treat a specific symptom of PGD rather than the grief itself. Medications were found to decrease depressive symptoms, but did not have a great impact on intensity of grief. While anti-depressants have a limited effect on grief specific symptoms, anti-depressants combined with cognitive behavioral therapy have been found to improve comorbid depressive symptoms. As with support groups, pharmacotherapy requires more research to conclude if there is a benefit to PGD overall, but what can be concluded is that medications can help target-specific symptoms that are present in patients with prolonged grief disorder.
