When an Electrical Project Deposit Falls Short of Startup Costs

An electrical contractor may need cash up front for permits, a first purchase of cable and conduit, special equipment orders, and jobsite setup before any progress billing can happen. On a $120,000 project, those startup expenses might total $21,000, while a common 10% deposit would provide only $12,000. In that case, the contractor must cover the $9,000 difference from operating cash. The key idea is that the initial deposit should be based on the contractor’s real pre-billing expenses, not on a percentage chosen only to seem easy for the customer.
