Separate Deposit for Ordered Materials

On jobs with expensive, long-lead equipment—such as a service upgrade or switchgear installation—use a separate deposit for the materials portion of the work. That deposit should match the purchase order and the supplier’s payment schedule, because the contractor may need to pay the supplier well before the equipment is delivered. Structuring the deposit this way protects the contractor’s working capital and moves the financing burden to the customer, who is the one receiving the equipment.
