Exponential notation is a concise mathematical method used to represent a number or variable that is repeatedly multiplied by itself. It consists of two parts: a **base** and an **exponent**. The base is the quantity being multiplied, and the exponent, written as a superscript, indicates the exact number of times the base is used as a factor. For example, in the expression $$a^m$$, the exponent $$m$$ tells us how many times we use the base $$a$$ as a factor, condensing the expanded form into a shorter notation.

Exponential Notation in Algebra

The standard way to read an exponential expression $$a^n$$ aloud is "$$a$$ to the $$n^{th}$$ power." For example, $$9^4$$ is read as "$$9$$ to the fourth power," and $$12^5$$ is read as "$$12$$ to the fifth power." However, two specific exponents have special names: $$a^2$$ is typically read as "$$a$$ squared," and $$a^3$$ is read as "$$a$$ cubed."

Verbal Conventions for Reading Exponents

When a negative sign appears alongside an exponent, the placement of parentheses determines what the exponent acts on, and this distinction can change the sign of the result:

- **$$(-a)^n$$** — The parentheses make the entire quantity $$-a$$ the base. The exponent directs you to multiply $$-a$$ by itself $$n$$ times. When $$n$$ is **even**, the product of an even number of negative factors is **positive**; when $$n$$ is **odd**, the product is **negative**.

- **$$-a^n$$** — Without parentheses enclosing the negative sign, only $$a$$ is the base. The order of operations requires the exponent to be evaluated first, producing $$a^n$$, and then the negative sign is applied: $$-a^n = -(a^n)$$. Because this is simply the opposite of a positive power, the result is **always negative** (when $$a > 0$$).

The critical takeaway is that parentheses around the negative sign cause the exponent to repeatedly multiply the negative number, whereas the absence of parentheses means the exponent applies only to the positive number and the negation happens afterward.

$$(-a)^n$$ Versus $$-a^n$$

To simplify $$3^4$$, first expand it as the base $$3$$ multiplied by itself four times: $$3^4 = 3 \cdot 3 \cdot 3 \cdot 3$$. Then evaluate by multiplying from left to right: $$3 \cdot 3 = 9$$, then $$9 \cdot 3 = 27$$, and finally $$27 \cdot 3 = 81$$. Therefore, $$3^4 = 81$$.

Simplifying $$3^4$$ by Expanding Factors

The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of all its variables. For a term with a single variable, the degree equals the exponent on that variable — for example, $$8y^2$$ has a degree of $$2$$ and $$-13a$$ has a degree of $$1$$ (since $$a = a^1$$). For a term with multiple variables, the exponents are added together — for example, $$-9x^3y^5$$ has a degree of $$3 + 5 = 8$$. A special case is a constant term (a monomial with no variable at all), which always has a degree of $$0$$ because there are no variable factors present.

Degree of a Term

Applying the definition of exponents to four expressions with different types of bases demonstrates that the expand-and-multiply procedure works regardless of whether the base is a whole number, a fraction, or a decimal:

**ⓐ $$4^3 = 64$$:** The exponent $$3$$ directs us to use the base $$4$$ as a factor three times. Expand and multiply: $$4 \cdot 4 \cdot 4 = 64$$.

**ⓑ $$7^1 = 7$$:** The exponent $$1$$ means the base appears as a factor only once, so $$7^1 = 7$$. Any number raised to the first power equals itself.

**ⓒ $$\left(\frac{5}{6}\right)^2 = \frac{25}{36}$$:** The exponent $$2$$ tells us to multiply two factors of the fraction $$\frac{5}{6}$$. Multiply the numerators and the denominators: $$\frac{5}{6} \cdot \frac{5}{6} = \frac{25}{36}$$.

**ⓓ $$(0.63)^2 = 0.3969$$:** The exponent $$2$$ tells us to multiply two factors of the decimal $$0.63$$: $$(0.63)(0.63) = 0.3969$$.

These four parts illustrate that the same procedure — expanding the exponent into repeated multiplication of the base and then computing the product — applies uniformly to whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Simplifying $$4^3$$, $$7^1$$, $$\left(\frac{5}{6}\right)^2$$, and $$(0.63)^2$$

The **Product Property for Exponents** provides a shortcut for multiplying two exponential expressions that share the same base. If $$a$$ is a real number and $$m$$ and $$n$$ are integers, then:

$$a^m \cdot a^n = a^{m+n}$$

In words: to multiply powers with the same base, keep the base and **add the exponents**. The property was originally derived for whole-number exponents using the definition of repeated multiplication — for example, $$x^2 \cdot x^3 = (x \cdot x)(x \cdot x \cdot x) = x^5$$ — and extends to all integer exponents, including zero and negative values. A numerical check confirms the rule: $$2^2 \cdot 2^3 = 4 \cdot 8 = 32$$, and $$2^{2+3} = 2^5 = 32$$.

This property differs from combining like terms (addition and subtraction), where both the base and the exponent must match. When multiplying, the bases must be the same but the exponents may differ.

Product Property for Exponents

Simplify $$y^5 \cdot y^6$$.

Both factors share the same base $$y$$, so the Product Property for Exponents applies. Add the exponents while keeping the base unchanged:

$$y^5 \cdot y^6 = y^{5+6} = y^{11}$$

The result is $$y^{11}$$. Rather than writing out all 11 factors of $$y$$ and multiplying, the Product Property condenses the calculation to a single addition of the exponents.

Simplifying $$y^5 \cdot y^6$$ Using the Product Property

Apply the Product Property for Exponents to two expressions with numerical bases.

**ⓐ $$2^5 \cdot 2^9 = 2^{14}$$:** Both factors have base $$2$$. Add the exponents: $$2^5 \cdot 2^9 = 2^{5+9} = 2^{14}$$.

**ⓑ $$3 \cdot 3^4 = 3^5$$:** The first factor, $$3$$, can be written as $$3^1$$ because any number without a visible exponent is understood to have an exponent of $$1$$. Now both factors share the base $$3$$: $$3^1 \cdot 3^4 = 3^{1+4} = 3^5$$.

Part (b) highlights an important detail: a base written without an exponent implicitly carries an exponent of $$1$$, so the Product Property still applies.

Simplifying $$2^5 \cdot 2^9$$ and $$3 \cdot 3^4$$ Using the Product Property

The **Power Property for Exponents** provides a shortcut for raising an exponential expression to another power. If $$a$$ is a real number, and $$m$$ and $$n$$ are integers, then:

$$(a^m)^n = a^{m \cdot n}$$

In words: to raise a power to a power, keep the base and **multiply the exponents**. The property follows from the definition of exponents. Consider $$(x^2)^3$$: the outer exponent $$3$$ means $$x^2$$ appears as a factor three times, giving $$x^2 \cdot x^2 \cdot x^2$$. Expanding each $$x^2$$ into its two factors of $$x$$ reveals $$2 + 2 + 2 = 6$$ factors of $$x$$ altogether, so $$(x^2)^3 = x^6$$. Because $$6 = 2 \cdot 3$$, the total number of factors equals the product of the two exponents. A numerical check confirms the rule: $$(3^2)^3 = 9^3 = 729$$, and $$3^{2 \cdot 3} = 3^6 = 729$$. This rule holds true for all integer exponents, including negative ones.

Power Property for Exponents

The **Product to a Power Property for Exponents** provides a shortcut for raising a product of factors to a power. If $$a$$ and $$b$$ are real numbers and $$m$$ is an integer, then:

$$(ab)^m = a^m b^m$$

In words: to raise a product to a power, raise **each factor** to that power separately. The property was originally developed for whole-number exponents using the definition of repeated multiplication. Consider $$(2x)^3$$: by definition, this means $$2x \cdot 2x \cdot 2x$$. Grouping like factors gives $$2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x = 2^3 \cdot x^3 = 8x^3$$. Each factor in the original product is raised to the exponent individually. The property extends to all integer exponents.

A numerical check confirms the rule: $$(2 \cdot 3)^2 \stackrel{?}{=} 2^2 \cdot 3^2$$. The left side gives $$6^2 = 36$$, and the right side gives $$4 \cdot 9 = 36$$ ✓.

Product to a Power Property for Exponents

The **Quotient Property for Exponents** provides a shortcut for dividing two exponential expressions that share the same base. If $$a$$ is a real number, $$a \neq 0$$, and $$m$$ and $$n$$ are whole numbers, then:

When $$m > n$$: $$\frac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n}$$

When $$n > m$$: $$\frac{a^m}{a^n} = \frac{1}{a^{n-m}}$$

In words: to divide powers with the same base, keep the base and **subtract the exponents**. The property follows from canceling common factors in the numerator and denominator. For instance, $$\frac{x^5}{x^2} = \frac{x \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x}{x \cdot x}$$. Canceling the two shared factors of $$x$$ leaves three factors in the numerator: $$x^3 = x^{5-2}$$. When the larger exponent is in the denominator, the uncanceled factors remain below the fraction bar: $$\frac{x^2}{x^5} = \frac{1}{x^3} = \frac{1}{x^{5-2}}$$. A numerical check confirms the rule: $$\frac{2^5}{2^2} = \frac{32}{4} = 8$$, and $$2^{5-2} = 2^3 = 8$$ ✓.

This property is the division counterpart to the Product Property for Exponents, which adds exponents when multiplying powers of the same base.

Quotient Property for Exponents

The **Quotient to a Power Property for Exponents** provides a shortcut for raising a fraction to a power. If $$a$$ and $$b$$ are real numbers, $$b \neq 0$$, and $$m$$ is an integer, then:

$$\left(\frac{a}{b}\right)^m = \frac{a^m}{b^m}$$

In words: to raise a fraction to a power, raise both the numerator and the denominator to that power separately. The property follows from the definition of exponents applied to fraction multiplication. Consider $$\left(\frac{x}{y}\right)^3$$: by definition, this means $$\frac{x}{y} \cdot \frac{x}{y} \cdot \frac{x}{y}$$. Multiplying the numerators together and the denominators together gives $$\frac{x \cdot x \cdot x}{y \cdot y \cdot y} = \frac{x^3}{y^3}$$. Each part of the fraction is raised to the exponent individually. A numerical check confirms the rule: $$\left(\frac{2}{3}\right)^2 \stackrel{?}{=} \frac{2^2}{3^2}$$. The left side gives $$\frac{2}{3} \cdot \frac{2}{3} = \frac{4}{9}$$, and the right side gives $$\frac{4}{9}$$. This property extends to negative integer exponents as well, and is the division counterpart to the Product to a Power Property, which distributes an exponent across factors in a product.

Quotient to a Power Property for Exponents

To convert a number from standard decimal notation into scientific notation, follow a four-step procedure:

1. **Move the decimal point** so that the first factor is greater than or equal to $$1$$ but less than $$10$$.
2. **Count the number of decimal places, $$n$$,** that the decimal point was moved.
3. **Write the number as a product with a power of $$10$$:**
   - If the original number is **greater than $$1$$**, the power of $$10$$ will be $$10^n$$ (positive exponent).
   - If the original number is **between $$0$$ and $$1$$**, the power of $$10$$ will be $$10^{-n}$$ (negative exponent).
4. **Check** that the result makes sense by verifying that multiplying the first factor by the power of $$10$$ returns the original number.

The direction in which the decimal point moves determines the sign of the exponent: moving it to the **left** (for numbers greater than $$1$$) yields a positive exponent, while moving it to the **right** (for numbers between $$0$$ and $$1$$) yields a negative exponent.

Procedure for Converting from Decimal Notation to Scientific Notation

Scientific notation expresses a number as the product of a coefficient and a power of ten, written in the form: $$a imes 10^n$$ where $$1 \leq |a| < 10$$ and $$n$$ is an integer. The coefficient $$a$$ must have an absolute value that is at least $$1$$ but strictly less than $$10$$ — meaning exactly one nonzero digit appears before the decimal point. The integer exponent $$n$$ conveys the number's order of magnitude: a positive $$n$$ represents a number larger than $$1$$ (e.g., $$4{,}000 = 4 imes 10^3$$), while a negative $$n$$ represents a number between $$0$$ and $$1$$ (e.g., $$0.004 = 4 imes 10^{-3}$$). This connection arises because our place-value system is built on powers of $$10$$: thousands correspond to $$10^3$$, thousandths correspond to $$\frac{1}{10^3} = 10^{-3}$$, and so on. By convention, scientific notation uses the cross symbol $$	imes$$ as the multiplication sign, even though this symbol is normally avoided elsewhere in algebra to prevent confusion with variables.

Scientific Notation

When $$a$$ and $$b$$ are real numbers and $$m$$ and $$n$$ are **rational** numbers, the following seven properties govern how exponents behave across multiplication, division, and raising to a power:

| Property | Rule |
|---|---|
| **Product Property** | $$a^m \cdot a^n = a^{m+n}$$ |
| **Power Property** | $$(a^m)^n = a^{m \cdot n}$$ |
| **Product to a Power** | $$(ab)^m = a^m b^m$$ |
| **Quotient Property** ($$m > n$$) | $$\frac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n}$$, $$a \neq 0$$ |
| **Quotient Property** ($$n > m$$) | $$\frac{a^m}{a^n} = \frac{1}{a^{n-m}}$$, $$a \neq 0$$ |
| **Zero Exponent** | $$a^0 = 1$$, $$a \neq 0$$ |
| **Quotient to a Power** | $$\left(\frac{a}{b}\right)^m = \frac{a^m}{b^m}$$, $$b \neq 0$$ |

These properties were originally established for whole-number exponents and later extended to integer exponents (including zero and negative values). With the introduction of rational exponents, the same rules apply when the exponents are fractions — the arithmetic operations on the exponents (adding, subtracting, multiplying) simply involve fraction arithmetic instead of integer arithmetic. The first three properties handle products and powers of products, while the last four handle quotients, the zero-exponent special case, and powers of quotients. Together they form a complete toolkit for simplifying any expression built from powers of the same base, whether those powers are whole numbers, integers, or rational numbers.

Additionally, describe the difference between **exponential notation** and **expanded notation**, using the specific example $$6^3$$ to illustrate your definitions.

Standardizing Calculation Reports in Logistics

A technical trainer is developing a 'Math for Technicians' guide for a manufacturing company. While explaining the expression $$b^n$$, the trainer defines the **base** ($$b$$). Which of the following best describes the role of the base in this notation?

A quality control inspector is reviewing a technical specification that lists a machinery tolerance level as $$6^4$$. According to the definition of exponential notation, which of the following represents this value written in **expanded notation**?

When a number $$n$$ is multiplied by itself to produce a value $$m$$, the resulting equation is $$n^2 = m$$. In this relationship, the product $$m$$ is strictly defined as the square of the original number $$n$$.

Square of a Number

In an exponential expression, the **exponent** is the superscript number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor in repeated multiplication. It dictates the total number of times the base must be multiplied by itself. For instance, in the expression $$2^3$$, the number $$3$$ is the exponent, which tells us that the base $$2$$ undergoes repeated multiplication three times: $$2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2$$.

Algebraic Exponent

In an exponential expression, the **base** is the specific number or variable that is subjected to repeated multiplication. It is the core quantity being multiplied by itself, with the total number of repetitions determined by the exponent. For example, in the expression $$2^3$$, the number $$2$$ serves as the base that is multiplied three times.

Algebraic Base

When an expression involving exponents is written out explicitly as the repeated multiplication of its base, it is in expanded notation. For example, while the expression $$2^3$$ is in exponential notation, its equivalent in expanded notation is $$2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2$$. This notation clearly displays every individual factor being multiplied.

Expanded Notation

To write a repeated multiplication expression in exponential form, identify the repeating factor to use as the base, and count the number of times it appears to determine the exponent. For instance, the expanded expression $$2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 2$$ has $$2$$ as the repeating factor (base) appearing $$9$$ times, so it is compactly written in exponential form as $$2^9$$. In general, a factor $$a$$ multiplied by itself $$n$$ times is written as $$a^n$$.
