Verbal Conventions for Reading Exponents

The standard way to read an exponential expression ana^n aloud is "aa to the nthn^{th} power." For example, 949^4 is read as "99 to the fourth power," and 12512^5 is read as "1212 to the fifth power." However, two specific exponents have special names: a2a^2 is typically read as "aa squared," and a3a^3 is read as "aa cubed."
