Differences in Human Capital as a Driver of the Gender Wage Gap

Disparities in human capital—the accumulated knowledge, skills, and experience of individuals—can contribute to the gender wage gap. If, on average, men and women differ in educational attainment, field of study, or years of work experience, these factors can lead to differences in productivity and, consequently, earnings. For example, historical gaps in educational opportunities or career interruptions for childcare can result in lower average human capital for women in certain cohorts, impacting their earning potential.
