Gender Differences in Negotiation as a Driver of the Gender Wage Gap

Differences in negotiation styles and outcomes between genders are often cited as a contributing factor to the gender wage gap. Research suggests that men may negotiate starting salaries and raises more frequently or aggressively than women. Furthermore, social biases can cause women who negotiate to be perceived more negatively than their male counterparts, creating a disincentive to bargain. These negotiation disparities can lead to cumulative differences in earnings over a career.
