Factoring Trinomials of the Form ax2+bx+cax^2 + bx + c Using Trial and Error

To factor a trinomial of the form ax2+bx+cax^2 + bx + c using the trial and error method, follow a six-step procedure. First, write the trinomial in descending order of degrees. Second, factor out any greatest common factor (GCF). Third, find all factor pairs of the first term. Fourth, find all factor pairs of the third term. Fifth, systematically test all possible combinations of these factor pairs—using them as the first and last terms of two binomials—until you find the pair whose inner and outer products sum to the middle term. Finally, check the result by multiplying the two binomial factors to verify they produce the original trinomial.
