Factors Influencing Cooperation in Community Irrigation Systems

While community irrigation systems are real-world examples of cooperation resolving social dilemmas, the success of this cooperation is not universal. Research by political scientist Elinor Ostrom in countries like India and Nepal reveals that the level of cooperation varies significantly. Factors such as a pre-existing history of trust within a community can foster cooperation. Conversely, significant social and economic inequality, like disparities in land ownership or caste status, can discourage it and lead to more frequent conflicts over water usage.
