Snow's work supported the germ theory of disease by hypothesizing that a microbe was the infectious agent spreading through fecal-oral transmission. Along with the work of Ignaz Semmelweis, Snow's findings clearly refuted the prevailing miasma theory of the day, showing that disease is not only transmitted through the air but also through contaminated items.

He is also associated with the Hippocratic Oath, a pledge taken by new physicians to diagnose and treat patients without doing harm.

Marcus Terentius Varro ($${}116$$–$${}27$$ BC) was a prolific Roman writer and one of the earliest individuals to suggest that invisible entities could cause disease. In his work Res Rusticae (On Farming), published in $${}36$$ BC, he warned against neighborhood swamps, proposing that unseen creatures, which he termed animalia minuta (minute creatures), floated in the air, entered the body through the mouth and nose, and caused serious illnesses.

In $${}1546$$, the Italian physician Girolamo Fracastoro proposed in his essay 'De Contagione et Contagiosis Morbis' that seed-like spores could be transferred between individuals through direct contact, exposure to contaminated clothing, or the air. He is now recognized as an early proponent of the germ theory of disease, which states that microbial infections cause diseases. However, his ideas were not widely accepted in the $${}16$$th century and were largely forgotten until the $${}19$$th century.

In the $${}11$$th century, the Persian physician Ibn Sina, sometimes referred to as Avicenna, proposed that tuberculosis was likely spread by people's breath when they were in close proximity to one another.
