Monthly Billing Delay Expands Project Cash Needs

On many contractor jobs, the same timing gap appears in every billing cycle. Labor must be paid as it is earned, suppliers often expect payment within about 30 days, and subcontractors usually want quick settlement, while customer payments may not arrive until 45 to 90 days after the work is performed. Because expenses keep arriving before the related collections do, the cash gap becomes largest in the middle portion of the project, when crews, materials, and subcontracted work are at their busiest. Each new month adds to the unpaid balance until the receipts finally begin to close the gap.
