Operant Conditioning Example: Dolphin Training

A clear example of operant conditioning is the training of Spirit, a dolphin at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. The dolphin learns to associate the behavior of performing an aerial flip with a pleasant consequence. When the trainer blows a whistle, Spirit performs the flip and is rewarded with a fish, which reinforces the behavior and makes it more likely to be repeated.
