The persona is a mask that one can wear in different situations. People do not realize when they wear these masks, but it can be observed. This concept was developed by Carl Jung. He described the persona as being developed from people's conscious experiences and collective unconscious.

Archetypes in Collective Unconscious

Carl Gustav Jung developed his theory of personality surrounding an idea of the Psyche. He describes the Psyche as the main part of his theory, with four different aspects going into it. First is the Psychic Energy, also known as “Libido.” Next, is the principle of opposites, followed by the principle of equivalence. Finally, there is the principle of entropy.

Persona

The Anima is the feminine side of someones's personality. The Animus is the masculine side. This can be shown by if a woman has a pushed anima, she would be considered a "girlie girl." If the Animus were pushed, she would be a "tomboy."

The shadow is considered the darkness. Jung sees creativity as aggressive and angry. Creativeness falls into the shadow because it goes against social norms.

This is a person's drive to become whole. People use pieces and put them together to become whole. The goal is for self realization, which is the center of the Psyche.

Structures of the Psyche

In Jung's theory, the end goal is self-realization, or the combination of many components and forces of the psyche. This is combined with Individualization, or the process of psychological maturity. Individualization is the path to take to achieve self-realization.

Self-Realization

Analytical psychology, a theory developed by Carl Jung, focuses on balancing the opposing forces of conscious and unconscious thought and experience within one's personality. Jung framed this as a continuous learning process, occurring primarily in the second half of life, that involves becoming aware of unconscious elements and integrating them into consciousness.

Analytical Psychology

The collective unconscious, a concept from Carl Jung's analytical psychology, is a universal version of the personal unconscious. It functions as a theoretical repository for 'memory traces' or mental patterns inherited from our ancestors and shared by all of humanity. These ancestral memories contain universal themes and symbols known as archetypes, which are common to all people regardless of culture.

Collective Unconscious

Carl Jung's focus on self-realization and a future-oriented perspective on personality development is seen as a precursor to the humanistic psychology movement. His ideas anticipated the humanistic emphasis on self-actualization and personal growth.

Carl Jung introduced two fundamental attitudes toward life, extroversion and introversion, which are considered among his most significant contributions to personality psychology. These concepts are now integral to nearly all modern personality models. Jung posited that achieving a balance between these two opposing attitudes is essential for the process of self-realization.

A specific criticism of the neo-Freudian school is exemplified by Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious. His conclusions regarding its existence were not derived from empirical scientific research but were instead based on his interpretations of non-scientific sources such as myths, legends, dreams, and art.
