Sanai's Description of Planetary Auspiciousness and Aspects in Hadiqat al-Haqiqah

In Section 49 of Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sanai outlines the medieval astrological categorization of planetary influences and aspects:

Classification of the Seven Planets

  • Auspicious (Benefic): Two planets are inherently auspicious, acting as doers of good and sources of generosity (traditionally Jupiter and Venus).
  • Inauspicious (Malefic): Two planets are inherently inauspicious, ruinous, and bad (traditionally Saturn and Mars).
  • Moderate (Neutral): Two planets are moderate or average, balancing good and evil (traditionally Mercury and the Moon).
  • The Sun: Described as the ruler or master (kadkhoda) of the celestial sphere.

Planetary Aspects

  • Sextile (Tasdis): Mentioned as a favorable or auspicious aspect.
  • Trine (Taslis): Mentioned in contrast as an unfavorable aspect in this specific categorization.
