The Archetypal Role of the Nurse as a Go-Between in the Khosrow Nameh

In Section 19 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar highlights the classic literary archetype of the nurse (dāyeh) serving as a confidante and intermediary in Persian romance. Golrokh, consumed by her love for Hormoz, implores her nurse to act as a go-between. She urges her to use persuasion, flattery, and clever stratagems (talbis and fosun) to capture Hormoz's heart (symbolized as bringing the bird into the trap) and convey her messages. Within classical Persian romantic epics, the nurse is a crucial character who bridges the physical and social divides between the lovers, employing wit, experience, and discretion to facilitate their secret connection.
