The Firm as the Defining and Most Recent Institution of Capitalism

Although private property and markets are fundamental to capitalism, they are not its exclusive features, as both institutions have existed in various economies long before the rise of capitalism. The truly defining and most recently emerged component of the capitalist system is the firm. A firm is characterized as an economic entity where private owners of capital goods employ and manage labor to produce goods and services intended for sale in markets to generate a profit.
