Pre-Capitalist Economies with Markets and Private Property

Before the 17th century, many economies operated with the institutions of private property and markets, but were not capitalist. In these systems, production was typically decentralized, carried out by individual artisans (e.g., shoemakers, blacksmiths) or within family units on farms. While organizations with paid employees—the precursors to modern firms—did exist, they were not the dominant mode of production and played a minor economic role.
