Understanding the Study's Aim


A recent online survey included 80 women with disabilities from Hong Kong and China. It shows how common interpersonal violence is for them. The interviews show how cultural norms often pressure women to stay quiet and put up with abuse for the sake of family unity. They also describe feelings of isolation and financial control imposed by their abusers.


The Voices of Survivors

For women who escape abusive situations, the journey involves deep self-discovery and gained strength. Their stories show how they gradually recognize and reject unacceptable conditions. Often, this change is driven by worries about their children's safety or a specific incident that makes them realize they can't tolerate the abuse anymore. Despite societal pressure, they find courage and seek help from friends or supportive social workers. They discover their own value and rights. Highlighting these stories shows the importance of role models and the power of personal empowerment.


Survivor Pathways

The study provides important recommendations for addressing violence against disabled women. First, it calls for better data collection to fully understand the issue. It also suggests ways to help women with disabilities become more independent and to ensure they have easy access to public and private services. The study emphasizes the need to train professionals on the specific challenges faced by disabled women to provide better support. By making these changes, policymakers and service providers can better protect and empower vulnerable women.
