Why Do We Still Lecture?

The author begins by defining ‘passive learning’. Passive learning is a traditional teaching approach that consists of lectures and powerpoint slides. This teaching style depends on fact memorization and cramming information from the students. The author describes this teaching style as a “one size fits all’ approach to learning”, and goes on to say it is not effective (DiPiro, 2009). He goes on to discuss experimental approaches to education, naming engaging activities and diversifying the work required of students increased information retention. This means that the students retained more of the content they learned with the experimental education.
