Developmental Trajectories of Borderline Personality Disorder in Childhood and Adolescence: Why It's Important

It is important to understand how borderline personality disorder develops over time and to identify potential precursors for the disorder in children and adolescents. Since an individual cannot be diagnosed with a personality disorder until they are eighteen years old, treatment doesn’t typically occur until this time. By this point, many individuals have been experiencing symptoms for years. Therefore, the knowledge regarding the development of the disorder can be used to provide treatment earlier, which could potentially reduce or prevent symptoms. It is also possible that the early intervention could reduce the risk of the child developing the disorder in the future.
