Developmental Trajectories of Borderline Personality Disorder in Childhood and Adolescence: Emotional Coping
A longitudinal study demonstrated that as children age, their ability to cope with anger and sadness improved. This was true even for participants deemed to be at a higher risk for developing BPD in the future. However, the study showed that adolescents whose coping skills improved at a slower rate and those that utilized maladaptive coping mechanisms were more likely to demonstrate greater BPD symptoms.
