Developmental Trajectories of Borderline Personality Disorder in Childhood and Adolescence: Emotional Suppression/Inhibition

Emotional suppression , or emotional inhibition, is the act of avoiding or holding in negative emotions instead of properly coping with them. This is a common characteristic in those with BPD. Research indicates that those with a greater tendency to suppress sadness as well as those who experience a more significant increase in these tendencies throughout childhood and adolescence are more likely to demonstrate more severe borderline personality disorder symptoms.
