Hypothetical 14th Century Global Income Distribution

A thought experiment based on the travels of Ibn Battuta suggests that the global income distribution in the 14th century was fundamentally different from today's. While income disparities between the rich and poor existed within each region, the differences in average income between the world's regions were relatively small. This indicates that in the pre-industrial era, within-country inequality was a more significant feature of the global economic landscape than between-country inequality.
