Limitation of SRRS: Inability to Establish Causation
A primary limitation of the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) is that its correlational design cannot establish a causal link between stress and illness. Although studies show that higher stress scores are associated with more health problems, this does not prove that stress causes illness. The relationship could be bidirectional, with illness causing stress, or an unmeasured third variable could be responsible for both.

A study finds a strong positive association between the number of major life adjustments (e.g., marriage, job change, moving) an individual experiences in a year and the number of physical illnesses they report. Based on this finding, a researcher concludes that major life adjustments are a direct cause of physical illness. What is the primary flaw in this conclusion?
