Simplifying 3(9.25)3(9.25) Using the Distributive Property

Use the distributive property to compute 3(9.25)3(9.25) — the total cost when three friends each need $9.25 for a movie ticket:

Step 1 — Break the decimal into a convenient sum: Rewrite 9.259.25 as 9+0.259 + 0.25:

3(9.25)=3(9+0.25)3(9.25) = 3(9 + 0.25)

Step 2 — Distribute the factor of 33: Multiply 33 by each addend separately:

3(9)+3(0.25)3(9) + 3(0.25)

Step 3 — Compute each product: 3(9)=273(9) = 27 and 3(0.25)=0.753(0.25) = 0.75:

27+0.7527 + 0.75

Step 4 — Add: 27+0.75=27.7527 + 0.75 = 27.75.

The total amount needed is $27.75. This example illustrates the intuition behind the distributive property: thinking of the dollars and quarters separately and then combining the results is equivalent to multiplying the full amount all at once.
