Standard Form of a Complex Number

A complex number is in standard form when it is written as a+bia + bi, where aa represents the real part and bibi represents the imaginary part. Both aa and bb are real numbers. Writing a complex number in this format explains why the preferred way to express the square root of a negative number is b=bi\sqrt{-b} = \sqrt{b}i when b>0b > 0.
