کودکی در پیش تابوت پدر
زار می نالید و بر می کوفت سر

کای پدر آخر کجاات می برند
تا تو را در زیر خاکی آورند

می برندت خانه ای تنگ و زحیر
نی درو قالی و نه در وی حصیر

نی چراغی در شب و نه روز نان
نه درو بوی طعام و نه نشان

نی درش معمور نی بر بام راه
نی یکی همسایه کو باشد پناه

چشم تو که بوسه گاه خلق بود
چون شود در خانهٔ کور و کبود

خانهٔ بی زینهار و جای تنگ
که درو نه روی می ماند نه رنگ

زین نسق اوصاف خانه می شمرد
وز دو دیده اشک خونین می فشرد

گفت جوحی با پدر ای ارجمند
والله این را خانهٔ ما می برند

گفت جوحی را پدر ابله مشو
گفت ای بابا نشانیها شنو

این نشانیها که گفت او یک بیک
خانهٔ ما راست بی تردید و شک

نه حصیر و نه چراغ و نه طعام
نه درش معمور و نه صحن و نه بام

زین نمط دارند بر خود صد نشان
لیک کی بینند آن را طاغیان

خانهٔ آن دل که ماند بی ضیا
از شعاع آفتاب کبریا

تنگ و تاریکست چون جان جهود
بی نوا از ذوق سلطان ودود

نه در آن دل تافت نور آفتاب
نه گشاد عرصه و نه فتح باب

گور خوشتر از چنین دل مر تو را
آخر از گور دل خود برتر آ

زنده ای و زنده زاد ای شوخ و شنگ
دم نمی گیرد تو را زین گور تنگ

یوسف وقتی و خورشید سما
زین چه و زندان بر آ و رو نما

یونست در بطن ماهی پخته شد
مخلصش را نیست از تسبیح بد

گر نبودی او مسبح بطن نون
حبس و زندانش بدی تا یبعثون

او بتسبیح از تن ماهی بجست
چیست تسبیح آیت روز الست

گر فراموشت شد آن تسبیح جان
بشنو این تسبیحهای ماهیان

هر که دید الله را اللهیست
هر که دید آن بحر را آن ماهیست

این جهان دریاست و تن ماهی و روح
یونس محجوب از نور صبوح

گر مسبح باشد از ماهی رهید
ورنه در وی هضم گشت و ناپدید

ماهیان جان درین دریا پرند
تو نمی بینی که کوری ای نژند

بر تو خود را می زنند آن ماهیان
چشم بگشا تا ببینیشان عیان

ماهیان را گر نمی بینی پدید
گوش تو تسبیحشان آخر شنید

صبر کردن جان تسبیحات تست
صبر کن کانست تسبیح درست

هیچ تسبیحی ندارد آن درج
صبر کن الصبر مفتاح الفرج

صبر چون پول صراط آن سو بهشت
هست با هر خوب یک لالای زشت

تا ز لالا می گریزی وصل نیست
زانک لالا را ز شاهد فصل نیست

تو چه دانی ذوق صبر ای شیشه دل
خاصه صبر از بهر آن نقش چگل

مرد را ذوق از غزا و کر و فر
مر مخنث را بود ذوق از ذکر

جز ذکر نه دین او و ذکر او
سوی اسفل برد او را فکر او

گر برآید تا فلک از وی مترس
کو به عشق سفل آموزید درس

او به سوی سفل می راند فرس
گرچه سوی علو جنباند جرس

از علمهای گدایان ترس چیست
کان علمها لقمهٔ نان را رهیست

English translation

A child before his father's coffin was wailing bitterly and beating his head: O father, where at last are they taking you, to bring you under the earth? They are taking you to a cramped and distressing house, with no carpet in it and no mat; no lamp at night and no bread by day, no smell of food in it and no trace of any. Its door is not in good repair, nor is there a way onto the roof; there is no neighbor there to give refuge. Your eye, which was a place people kissed, how will it be in that blind, dark house? A house without protection, a narrow place, where neither face nor color remains. In this manner he was listing the house's attributes and pouring bloody tears from both eyes. Juhi said to his father: O honored one, by God, they are taking this man to our house. Juhi's father said: Do not be foolish. He said: Father, listen to the signs. These signs that he gave one by one belong to our house, without doubt or uncertainty: no mat, no lamp, no food, no well-kept door, no courtyard, and no roof. They carry a hundred signs of this kind upon themselves, but when do the rebellious ever see them? The house of the heart that remains without light from the ray of the sun of divine majesty is cramped and dark like the soul of a Jew, deprived of the taste of the loving King. Into that heart no sunlight has shone; there is no spacious expanse and no opening of a door. A grave is better for you than such a heart; at last rise above the grave of your own heart. You are alive and born of the Living, O lively one; does this narrow grave not stop your breath? You are the Joseph of the age and the sun of heaven; rise from this well and prison and show your face. Jonah was ripened in the fish's belly; for the sincere one, glorification is not harmful. Had he not been glorifying in the belly of the fish, his confinement and prison would have lasted until Resurrection. Through glorification he escaped from the fish's body. What is glorification? The sign of the Day of Alast. If you have forgotten that glorification of the soul, listen to these glorifications of the fish. Whoever has seen Allah belongs to Allah; whoever has seen that ocean is that fish. This world is the sea, the body the fish, and the spirit is Jonah, veiled from the morning light. If it glorifies, it is freed from the fish; otherwise it is digested in it and disappears. The fish of the soul are abundant in this sea; you do not see them because you are blind, wretched one. Those fish strike themselves against you; open your eyes so that you may see them plainly. If you do not see the fish visibly, your ear has at least heard their glorification. The soul's patience is your glorification; be patient, for that is the true glorification. No glorification has that rank: be patient; patience is the key to relief. Patience is like the bridge of Sirat, with paradise on the far side; with every beauty there is an ugly nurse. As long as you flee from the nurse, there is no union, for the nurse is not separate from the beloved. What do you know of the taste of patience, O glass-hearted one, especially patience for the sake of that Chigil beauty? A man takes delight in battle, charge, and attack; the effeminate man takes delight in the male organ. Nothing but that organ is his religion and his remembrance; his thought carries him downward. If he rises to the heavens, do not fear him, for he has learned his lesson in love of the low. He drives his horse downward, though he rings his bell toward the high. Why fear the banners of beggars? Those banners are servants of a morsel of bread.
