Book Two - Section 58 - The Muhtasib Summoning the Fallen Dead Drunk to Prison

Original content

English translation

The muḥtasib arrived somewhere at midnight and saw a drunk asleep at the foot of a wall. He said: "Hey, drunkard, what have you drunk? Tell me." He said: "I drank of that which is in the jug." He said: "Then tell me, what is in the jug?" He said: "Of what I have drunk." He said: "This is obscure!" He said: "What is it that you have drunk?" He said: "That which is hidden in the jug." This question and answer kept going round and round; the muḥtasib remained stuck in the mire like a donkey. The muḥtasib said to him: "Come, heave a sigh!" The drunk said "hū hū" at the moment of speech. He said: "I said sigh (āh), yet you say 'hū'!" He said: "I am joyful and you are bent double with grief. 'Āh' comes from pain and grief and injustice; the 'hū hū' of the wine-drinkers comes from joy." The muḥtasib said: "I don't understand this; rise, rise! Don't carve out gnosis — leave off this quarrel." He said: "Go — you from where, I from where?" He said: "Drunkard, rise and come to prison." The drunk said: "O muḥtasib, leave me and go — how can one take a pledge from one who is naked? If I even had the strength to walk, I would have gone to my own house — when would this have come about? If I were possessed of reason and means, I would be, like the sheikhs, at the head of my shop."
