اشتری گم کردی و جستیش چست
چون بیابی چون ندانی کان تست؟
ضاله چه بود ناقهٔ گم کرده ای
از کفت بگریخته در پرده ای
آمده در بار کردن کاروان
اشتر تو زان میان گشته نهان
می دوی این سو و آن سو خشک لب
کاروان شد دور و نزدیکست شب
رخت مانده بر زمین در راه خوف
تو پی اشتر دوان گشته به طوف
کای مسلمانان که دیده ست اشتری
جسته بیرون بامداد از آخری
هر که بر گوید نشان از اشترم
مژدگانی می دهم چندین درم
باز می جویی نشان از هر کسی
ریش خندت می کند زین هر خسی
که اشتری دیدیم می رفت این طرف
اشتری سرخی به سوی آن علف
آن یکی گوید بریده گوش بود
وآن دگر گوید جلش منقوش بود
آن یکی گوید شتر یک چشم بود
وآن دگر گوید ز گر بی پشم بود
از برای مژدگانی صد نشان
از گزافه هر خسی کرده بیان
English translation
You have lost a camel and searched for it eagerly; when you find it, how could you not know that it is yours? What is a ḍālla? A lost she-camel, escaped from your hand into concealment. The caravan came to load up, and your camel disappeared from among them. You run this way and that, dry-lipped; the caravan has gone far, and night is near. Your goods remain on the ground on the fearful road, while you run wandering after the camel, saying: O Muslims, who has seen a camel that got out of the stable this morning? Whoever tells the marks of my camel, I will give so many dirhams as a reward. Again you ask everyone for signs; every low fellow mocks you for this, saying: We saw a camel going this way, a red camel toward that pasture. One says: it had a cropped ear; another says: its saddle-cloth was patterned. One says: the camel was one-eyed; another says: it was hairless from mange. For the sake of the reward, every low fellow has idly stated a hundred signs.
