Book Two — Section 102 — The Sufis' Reproach of That Sufi Who Speaks Too Much Before the Shaykh

Original content

English translation

The Sufis reproached a certain Sufi And came before the shaykh of the khanqah. They said to the shaykh: "Give our souls relief— Seek redress from this Sufi, O leader!"

He said: "Well now, what is the complaint, O Sufis?" They said: "This Sufi has three burdensome habits: In speech he talks too much, like a bell; In eating he eats more than twenty people; And when he sleeps he is like the People of the Cave." The Sufis pressed forward before the shaykh.

The shaykh turned toward that poor one and said: "In every state that is, take the middle way. The hadith says: 'The best of matters is their middle'; Benefit comes from the balance of the humors. If one humor exceeds by accident, Illness appears in the human body. Do not exceed your companion in attribute— For that will certainly bring separation in the end.

Moses's speech was measured, and yet It still exceeded the words of his good companion. That excess brought strife with Khidr— Khidr said: 'Go—you speak too much; this is the parting. O Moses, you are too verbose—go away, Or else be mute and blind with me.'

If you do not go and have sat down in stubbornness, You have in meaning already gone and broken off. When you suddenly break ritual purity during prayer, It tells you: 'Hurry, go make your ablution.' If you do not go, you limp along empty— Your very prayer is already gone, O misguided one.

Go to those who are your companions, Lovers who are thirsty for your words. A watchman is of more use to the drowsy; Fish have no need of a watchman. For the clothed, attention falls on the washerman; For the naked soul, divine manifestation is its ornament.

Either withdraw to one side from the naked ones, Or, like them, be free of bodily garments. If you cannot be wholly naked, Lessen the garments, so you may walk the middle path.
